When attempting a huge physical challenge, like we are with Mount Kilimanjaro, your fitness is massively important to your success or failure. It’s in your best interests to be in good physical condition to give yourself a greater chance of achieving your goal and actually enjoying yourself whilst doing it.
Standing at 19,341 feet Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world. This is no easy task and even typing that scares the crap out of me. We will be dealing with incredible altitudes and extreme climates which are going to take their toll on our bodies – Especially travelling from the heat and humidity of the Middle Eastern summer (around 48 degrees) to the snow and battering winds on the mountain top (around MINUS 20 degrees).
To put the height and altitude into perspective – my brother just completed an amazing sky dive jumping out of a plane at 13,000ft…. we are attempting to climb to that height and go even 6,431ft higher.
If I want to have a smidge of a chance of achieving my goal of reaching the summit then it’s time to get real and train this body hard. We have been working on stamina, endurance, cardio, balance and strength.
It’s been a really tough, tiring and sweaty few weeks but there is definite progress and we are both on a good track to be “mountain ready” in time.
Below is the fun training video I put together to give you a glimpse into what is involved with our physical training so far;
It was a lot of fun making the video so I hope you enjoyed watching it.
Have a great day!
