Oman’s Blogging Scene

The blogging scene in Oman is alive and kicking.

There are plenty of us doing our thaaaang and thankfully there is more than enough room for all of us. We are a diverse group of keyboard addicts, gossipers and photographers who all like to tell a different story and find our niche. That is what makes it so interesting.

Many of the previously well known (and also controversial) bloggers have faded away and as we now hear so often “the blogging scene just isn’t what it used to be”, yeah that is because we are trying to stay out of jail, thanks! We keep it clean. Mostly.

So here we are, the best/most interesting/popular/diverse/fun blogs that Oman has to offer at the moment.

(These are in no particular order)

The Duncan Adventures

Muscat Mutterings

How to live like an Omani Princess

Oman Collective Intelligence

Fat Su

Aish elaqtta

Life outside the M25

Jo in Oman

Sew Chic and Unique

Thank you to everyone who takes the time and effort to write these blogs to keep us updated and in the loop with what is happening in Oman.

If you spot that I have missed anyone then please drop me a line and I’ll add them in!

    Good listing…

    Hi !
Already following a few listed here. I write a blog too, just a random food blog, where I share food recipes and other random things 😀

Ah awesome, thank you Sidra. I just checked out your site, it made me very hungry (even though I had chicken wings and curly fries for dinner).

I will add it to the list of Bloggers.

I really miss Other Oman (she was my fave) but Muscat Mutterings and Dhofari Gucci are still here, and I do miss a less negative MJD;), and Catbird and Andy’s photos …but yeah, staying out of jail is key he he he. Thanks for the links, I haven’t updated my blog roll in ages.

    • Reply Heather 06/03/2015 at 10:37 AM

I do miss the controversy of what people used to write but it’s hard being a Blogger in a place like this, especially when you identity is out there, to go against the groove.

I’m just quite happy doing what I’m doing and not being arrested or having my site and all my hard work erased 🙂

    You have missed

    • Reply Heather 06/03/2015 at 10:39 AM

Hey, I haven’t heard of your site before so I just checked it out. I’ll add it in the list now.

      Keep on blogging 🙂

Thanks for the mention Heather. More blogs out there though 🙂

    • Reply Heather 07/03/2015 at 11:23 AM

Feel free to add any others in, these are mostly the ones that I read regularly and the ones that are still active from the past few months. A few people have fallen off the radar a little.

  • Reply Suburban 07/03/2015 at 8:38 AM

Nobody ever went to jail. Don’t believe for a second that ISS didn’t know who UD, MJD, or any of the rest of us were. You have an amazing forum to do real good and facilitate change with your blog. You write brilliantly, so get out there, and write BRILLIANTLY.

OPNO- drop me an email when you get a chance. Miss you, and thank you for the high praise.

    • Reply Heather 07/03/2015 at 11:28 AM

      Hey Suburban!
Nice to have you along with us.

I don’t know who ISS, UD and MJD are but maybe that’s a good thing. I’m just doing what is current and coming my way.

Your latest March post made me laugh with the Sponge Bob miaows haha! Good luck with that!

Thank you so much for the mention Heather, I am only just getting to know the Oman blogging scene and I am loving the diversity and also how friendly everyone is online! I’m intrigued by these more controversial bloggers, but seems that was all before my arrival. Thanks again 🙂

    • Reply Heather 08/03/2015 at 12:38 PM

No problem Doll, it’s nice to have a fresh blog page joining us. Keep doing what you’re doing 🙂

Most of the controversial ones were also before my time so I just hear the whispers of the stories they wrote haha.

    Hi Heather

I don’t know if I qualify as an “Oman Blogger” as I live just over the border in Al Ain, UAE. I do tend to write rather a lot about my adventures in Oman tho. Love following a fellow Aberdonian’s blog – keep up the good work!

    • Reply Heather 11/03/2015 at 10:13 PM

      Hey Marina!

Thanks so much for your comment, it is lovely to hear from a fellow Aberdonian!

I took a look at your site and it looks fab! So I will make a special add on bit at the end for you, since your not really an Oman based blogger but still something relevant that people will enjoy.

      • Reply Marina Bruce 11/03/2015 at 10:16 PM

Thanks Heather – my friends always said I was a “special case” ;). If ever you are in Al Ain, please look me up! BTW off to Oman this weekend, going to tackle the Starfish Dunes just south of Jebel Hafeet! Hope you have a good weekend 🙂

        • Reply Heather 12/03/2015 at 9:32 AM

Wow the Starfish Dunes look amazing, have a fab time and a look forward to reading all about it 🙂

My blog is controversial! Did you miss the one where I reveal that Tim Horton’s doesn’t use Real Fruit in their Real Fruit Smoothie? I’m waiting for the warning call. Although it’s been a while…

    • Reply Heather 12/03/2015 at 8:13 PM

Oh wow FatSu, you really ought to take a chill pill and stop causing such scandals in this town. You and your non-fruit smoothies are just too much to handle 😛

But yes I did read that on your page and was a bit horrified :O

Suburban: They changed some laws and started cracking down. At least two bloggers got phone calls (and we were anon). With me, I am not that worried but they threatened my passport application you know? Even with all my friends, and who I worked for, some people are still able to quite forefully say stop talking about this or that… It is really sad. Peaceful sit-ins being beaten up by police in masks, corruption in so many Ministries, and doing anything about it, even with proof means causing a lot of grief for one’s family and friends. Maybe I could tak eit you know, but my female Omani in-laws?: probably not. Not all of them.

Heather: ISS is like Oman’s internal security. Like INSET in Canada, or, I have no idea what UK’s branch is called— I really don’t know but they dealt with the IRA, and Al Queda. LOL as if we bloggers with our lip bloss, restaurant reviews, and basic living were scary…
But I have been interviewed by INSET before (and I wrote a purely Muslim fashion blog back then) and my ex boss who used to be part of UK’s version of inset back when the IRA was an issue totally backed me and that’s the only reason they stoppped bothering me I guess. Here in Oman I have been phoned, and so did two other anonymous bloggers, though I think they were more mad at the other two speaking about Omani culture. With me, since I am not Omani, they don’t have an issue with that. But I can’t post about police brutality, unlawful detainment, or corruption etc…… since the new laws…. soooooo, eye-candy it is.

    Fat-SU: Awesome post;)

    Hi Heather,
Thanks for including ‘Shots and Socks’ on the list.
Yey! It made my day 🙂
It’s a new blog, I’m glad you spotted it.

      Hey Erica!

No problem, glad to have you in the list. It’s always good to have more to read 🙂

    Hello Heather,
As journalist and author staying in Salalah , I like to write you about my new book ‘Whispers of Oman’ just published on the internet as an e-book but also available in Al Batra bookshop and Family bookshop….’Whispers of Oman’ tells story mainly about Omani women, who tell in their own words about their lives, the way how they reach their goals and how they play a part in the modernization of the country. At this moment I am in Belgium for a press tour about the book, mid October I am heading back to Salalah. I think, this book can be helpful to ‘expats’ to understand the environment, the lifestyle of the women, that surrounds them. On you have an inside look. Now If you want to write about the book, or just announce it, I can send you pictures of the cover. Have a nice day en keep on blogging…
